How to Record YouTube Videos with a Teleprompter on Mac

April 8, 2026

Most YouTube creators spend more time re-recording than they do editing. You flub a line, lose your train of thought, or realize halfway through that you forgot a key point. A teleprompter eliminates all of this.

Here's a complete workflow for recording scripted YouTube content on a Mac, from writing to export.

Step 1: Write your script

Don't write an essay. Write a conversation. Your script should sound like you're talking to one person sitting across from you.

  • Use short sentences (under 15 words when possible)
  • Write in contractions ("don't" not "do not")
  • Mark pauses with "..." or "[pause]"
  • Bold key phrases you want to emphasize
  • Keep paragraphs to 2-3 sentences max

A 5-minute video is roughly 700-800 words. Don't over-script — leave room for natural expression.

Step 2: Set up your teleprompter

Open your teleprompter app and paste your script. Configure these settings:

  • Font size: 40-48px (big enough to read without squinting)
  • Scroll speed: Start at 2x and adjust during practice
  • Window position: Directly below your webcam (the notch area on MacBooks)
  • Window width: 600-800px (narrow enough that your eyes don't scan)

Step 3: Practice once

Read through the entire script once with scrolling enabled. Don't record this — just get a feel for the pace. Adjust scroll speed if you felt rushed or had to wait. Mark any phrases that felt awkward and rewrite them.

Step 4: Set up lighting

Natural light from a window in front of you works well. If recording at night, a ring light or desk lamp positioned behind your monitor provides even illumination. Some teleprompter apps include a built-in fill light that brightens your screen to illuminate your face — subtle but effective.

Step 5: Record

For talking-head videos, use webcam recording mode. For tutorials and walkthroughs, screen recording with picture-in-picture puts your face in the corner while showing your screen.

Hit record, wait for the countdown, and deliver your script. If you make a mistake, pause for 2 seconds and restart the sentence — you can cut the mistake in editing. Don't stop the entire recording for small errors.

Step 6: Review and edit

Your recording is automatically saved as MP4. Import it into your editor of choice (iMovie, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro). Cut the pauses, trim the beginning and end, and add your intro/outro.

With a teleprompter, your editing time drops dramatically. No more cutting around 15 takes of the same paragraph.

Bonus: Recording for different platforms

The same teleprompter setup works for any video content:

  • YouTube long-form: Full script, 2x scroll speed, webcam mode
  • YouTube Shorts / Reels: Bullet points, faster speed, webcam mode
  • Course content: Detailed script, slower speed, screen + you mode
  • Product demos: Talking points (not full script), screen recording mode
  • Zoom presentations: Notes only, screen-share invisible mode
